Why transport in Stratford is key to town Partnership's aims - Colin Stewart
The Stratford-upon-Avon Town Transport Group (TTG) is a joint working group formed around 12 years ago by the Stratford Society, the Town Council, and Stratforward BID, as a sounding board for transport issues, policies, and projects affecting the town.
In addition to the founding organisations, the group draws its membership from the District and County Councils, and Accessible Stratford. In addition, there is a technical sub-group made up of individuals with great expertise in the transport industry. The group is represented on the Stratford Strategic Partnership by its chairman Colin Stewart, a former director at civil engineering firm Arup.
He explains why an integrated approach to all forms of transport in the town is something the TTG is promoting, and the Partnership is looking to focus on to improve Stratford in the coming years:
“It’s fair to say that transport is one of the biggest issues affecting Stratford – whether that is through congestion caused by private vehicles, the effects of HGVs, provision of public transport, and encouraging alternative methods like walking and cycling.
Stratford MP impressed by Strategic Partnership Group's plans to improve Stratford after meeting
Stratford-upon-Avon’s MP has praised the collaborative way a town group made up of several key organisations is working to improve Stratford for the future.
Nadhim Zahawi MP recently met with several members of the Stratford Strategic Partnership Group to hear about how it has brought local authorities and other key stakeholders together to discuss and influence major projects in the town.
Mr Zahawi heard about bringing plans forward to help revitalise the town centre, and how it is advising on plans to improve transport into the town.
He also heard how the Partnership worked together to help inform plans to improve Bridge Street and High Street and make it more appealing to pedestrians and cyclists and how it is working on a second bid for Levelling Up funding for the project.
Mr Zahawi said: “It was fantastic to meet with the Stratford Town Centre Strategic Partnership where we discussed our vision for the community. The group consists of stakeholders from a variety of local groups as well as the Town, District and County Councils and members come from a wide range of backgrounds.
Stratford's Strategic Partnership keeping accessibility for all in mind - Elizabeth Dixon
Accessible Stratford was founded by former police officer Elizabeth Dixon in the late 1980s after she was injured on duty in a road traffic accident, and since then has been using a wheelchair to get around.
Her voluntary organisation advises Stratford business on how they can make their premises more accessible to people with a range of disabilities.
Elizabeth explains why her voice is so important to be included on the Stratford Strategic Partnership Group, a collaboration between local authorities and prominent stakeholder organisations which is helping to influence key projects to improve Stratford for residents and visitors alike:
“I’ve been helping businesses in Stratford improve their accessibility for those with additional needs for many years now, but the fact is there is always more to do."
How Stratford Town Trust is helping town's Strategic Partnership shape Stratford's future - Sara Aspley
Stratford Town Trust, a historic organisation in Stratford upon Avon, is the custodian of an endowed estate which includes 112 properties in the town and awards grants to local charities.
It sits on the town’s Strategic Partnership Group, a collaboration between local authorities and prominent stakeholder organisations which is helping to influence key projects to improve Stratford for residents and visitors alike.
Sara Aspley, chief executive of Stratford Town Trust, explains why the Trust’s input is so important to the Partnership’s goals:
Stratford Town Trust is one of the biggest landlords in Stratford, and, as such, is heavily involved in the economic health and prosperity of the town.
