Stratford-upon-Avon Youth Council
Stratford-upon-Avon Youth Council
Youth Councils are forums that
represent the views of young people at a local level and are run by young
people for young people. They provide a
positive way of integrating their views into the local community. Quite simply, they give young people a voice which
so often is not heard or ignored.
The Town Council is concerned
that the lack of a Youth Council is a glaring omission in the decision making process,
and unanimously resolved to provide a platform to empower our young people to
have a say in what really matters to them as part of our community.
In July, Town Council unanimously resolved to establish a Steering Group of
young members to engage in the process of setting up Stratford-upon-Avon’s
first Youth Council. It is important to
note that the Town Council’s intention is to facilitate the Youth Council but
not interfere or try to run it. It
really will be a Youth Council run by young people for the benefit of young
people.
Initially, the Steering Group and Town Council
members will work proactively together to begin to define the Youth Council’s
responsibilities and its boundaries. Clear
objectives will be established and as the Youth Council progresses and matures,
additional responsibilities and objectives could be assumed.
If you are an enthusiastic individual between the
age of 13 and 18, live within the Stratford-upon-Avon town boundary and really
want to make a difference, then you would be an ideal Steering Group
member. You may very well go on to be on
the Youth Council, but this is obviously not guaranteed.
